Ascendance run an inclusive Dancing with Parkinson’s programme across Leeds & Bradford and have established 6 regular groups throughout Yorkshire and beyond on our online dance at home programme.
To date we have introduced over 250 people with Parkinson’s to dance and have engaged 75 regular participants per week in our groups across the region, which has had extremely positive health & wellbeing outcomes.
We now run 7 regular classes which are suitable for members with Parkinson’s face to face and on zoom. We are becoming a lovely community of dancers who attend regularly to exercise, have fun, support each other and to stay as mobile as possible to help prevent the progression of the disease.
The exercises are ideal for our conditions, they are within our limitations yet stretch us too. The teacher adapts the course to suit the participants
It has brought us both together and made us feel more positive
I feel that the physical workout is doing me good and making new friends has been a boost. It also feels good to be doing a physical activity with my partner. It is one of the highlights of our week.
Everything about the class helps; the room, the light, the view, the dance teacher, the volunteers, all the other participants. The choice of music is uplifting – no patronising
